Yeah, this seems silly on the face of it. There are other bio-fuels than old growth forests. I think we call this cherry picking your data to match biases though using old growth forests does seem really stupid.
There are trees that grow to firewood maturity in 5 years. Off the grid people can plan just an acre of them to supply a house hold. I'm not sure, but I expect hemp would be among the most efficient feed stocks and it could supply other saleable products.
While the Morocco bio-algae program was considered a failure because they couldn't separate out the oils, I bet it could have ben economically used, unprocessed, in power plants.
To address the problem of global warming we need to experiment to find out what will work and then have a mix of solutions.
