It's hard to believe the variety of ways people screw up what could be a good relationship... and the author doesn't even say what the problems was that she had. Their vow to love him was always meaningless. She may even be honest enough to say she only has enough love for her children. It's sad, because love is just about all he wants and certainly far more than sex. It comes as quite a betrayal.
