I would say that it is sad because religion can be a force for good, but it is not so sad, because while it doesn't make headlines much, religion is often source for good. Even with the weirdness of the pastors, the religious lay person you meet is often such a good person and as the Catholics are especially aware, there is a big difference between the priesthood and the laity.
