I think you minimize the challenges, particularly of the complicated hormonal dance during pregnancy. Eventually though, I think it will be a widely used technology. McMaster Bujold has written interesting discussions of it.

I don't think the issue will be about abortion that much. It may dominate the minds of the faithful, but they are alienating their children with their extremism. Also new birth control technology, particularly for men should greatly reduce the need for abortions. Besides, abortion is not a big thing in most countries.

As for synthetic embryos, that could be many things but generally means cloning, which is skipping a step in evolution that each generation represents. You might find a suggestion I make to be of interest in "Genetics For A New Human Ecology" based on pre-implantation selection. It should do what is required ethically and economically. (The book is more up- to date.)
