But what are those roots? What from the past has been lost?

I study this problem and to make it short, human moral instincts are not being "released" and developed. The biggest culprit is that science has crowded out "our roots", What are those roots? They are what our civilization and nation were built upon, philosphy, which is now commonly thought of as a rather espoteric subject taught to academics. Again, to make it short, if you want to solve this peroblems and others, start teaching the basics of philsophy to children like we teach reading and arithmatic. We used to until about the 1930's. Everyone wants children to be taught critical thinking, but no one wants to teach philosophy, the repository of critical thinking. There is so much more that depends on learning the basics of philosophy, including developing our moral instincts. It is our roots.
